SUPPORTING SUFFERERS -
SUPPORTING CARERS

Meetings

The Edinburgh & Lothian Support Group meets every two months, in Maggie's Centre, The Stables, Western General Hospital, Crewe Road South, Edinburgh EH4 2XU.
See also details below for meetings at St John's Hospital, Livingston.

Meetings are free and we usually have a guest speaker, expert in some form of Prostate Cancer treatment and management, or a sharing session with members - sufferers and carers - contributing.

Meetings also provide patients with an opportunity to chat informally with fellow patients and carers over a cup of coffee.

Do come along and bring your partner.

Our membership has grown. We have about 100 on our mailing list, and at the meetings we see up to half that number of patients and carers, so there are plenty of people to talk to. New patients are referred to us by staff at the Western General Hospital (the Specialist Nurse counsellors), or learn about the Group from existing members or from our publicity efforts

New Publication
One of our members, Chris Garner, has recently published a book "Natural approaches to prostate Cancer, a personal perspective", a thought provoking account of his approach to dealing with prostate cancer, based on direct experience. Everything he writes about, he has tried out himself. You may not agree with all his observations, but this remains an innovative, challenging and humane work.

This book is published free of charge by our group. Hard copies are in stock at the Maggie's Centre, The Stables, Western General Hospital, Crewe Road, Edinburgh. EH4 2XU. Although the work has no charge and costs have been carried by the Edinburgh Support Group, donations are welcome and will be used to to further the work of Maggie's Centres. Cheques should be made out to Maggie's Centre. Please write Prostate Book on the back of your cheque and send with your request to the Edinburgh Maggie's Centre at the address above.

RECENT MEETINGS AT THE MAGGIES' CENTRE, WESTERN GENERAL HOSPITAL

Thursday 4th February 2010 at 7 p.m.
We warmly invite you to our next meeting. Carers and friends are especially welcome. There will be refreshments available from 6.45 p.m. and we aim to finish by 9.00 p.m.
At the beginning of the meeting there will be an opportunity to meet with other people who are facing or undergoing your form of treatment, to raise questions and share information. As usual there will be a “New Members” group to welcome the recently diagnosed. A Urology Clinical Nurse Specialist and Maggie’s Psychologist will also be present to help answer your issues. As a result of requests from members, an additional group will discuss ‘End of Life’ issues in a room separate from the main meeting venue.
Our guest speakers from 7.45 – 8.45 are both experts in aspects of personal finance and should be able to deal with any queries you may have on these subjects.
John Elliot is a partner and chairman of the Edinburgh legal firm, Lindsay’s. He’s involved in financial planning, tax, wills, trusts and powers of attorney. A member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, he is also authorised to provide investment advice by the Financial Services Authority.
Julia Bain is Macmillan Welfare Rights Officer based in West Lothian. The Macmillan nurses are well- known for the practical, medical and emotional support they provide to patients and their families, but their role also extends to advice and information on financial matters, notably benefits.

Thursday 3rd June 2010 at 7 p.m.

New coffee machine at the HEBA Centre - Western General Hospital
Peter Phillips initiated the supply and donation by the Group of a very welcome coffee machine for the HEBA Centre at the WGH. Gratefully received!

A small group for those with advanced prostate cancer meet at Maggie's Centre. This group is chiefly intended for those men and their carers for whom hormone therapy (Zoladex etc.) is no longer effective.

We continue to monitor evidence of the impact of our Lottery-funded special publicity campaign through Hearts’ and Hibs’ grounds and in the local press. We even picked up evidence of the kind of response hidden from us - of men going to see their GP for the first time.

We run a regular series of feature adverts in the Evening News, Scotsman and Metro newspapers.

The Group's newsletter initiated and edited by Larry Foster, is well established as an important part of our work, in seeking to fulfil our aims. It helps to maintain contact with those on our mailing list who find it difficult to attend our meetings.

Our committee continue to wrestle with the challenge of meeting the needs of sufferers and carers spanning a very wide range of experiences, from the newly diagnosed, especially those facing a difficult choice of treatments to the increasing number who have been through a course of chemotherapy. Our aim will be to try to ensure that every group meeting includes an opportunity for each member to talk over his own situation and questions with others, who can also speak and share from experience.

The Group's introductory leaflet has been simplified. It now carries names and telephone numbers for anyone wishing to talk to one of us about a particular treatment option. We continue to field a number of varied enquiries by telephone.
