Progress
Report
The
group has met regularly in The PKAVS Gateway premises, with
speakers including our two Consultants who are very helpful
and supportive.
S.C.A.N.
in Tayside. Volunteers from within our group attend meetings
three or four times a year together with Health Professionals.
These meetings cover subjects like planning ahead, the review
of leaflets, research projects and improving prostate cancer
services
We
are always looking for ways in which to promote the activities
of the group and encourage new members to come along. Noscan
invited us to display our details on their web site and we
have willingly taken up their offer. We are also included
in the newly published “Macmillan Directory of Cancer
Support Groups”
Support:
We
continue to give support to patients who need it, and to attend
awareness exhibitions.
An
alternative therapies service has been set up with Macmillan
House in Perth. Free therapies are on offer to patients and
carers on application during the "DROP IN" Wednesday
facility.
BPH sufferers are now being offered an approved supplement
free. Feedback from users of this service is positive.
Membership:
We now have 62 members, with the pattern of some up and some
down continuing.
The
group has now in its eighth year in existence, with thanks
to a committed committee.
The
Gateway Centre in Perth is an ideal place for meetings of
our sort, since they can deliver facilities and equipment
suitable for most people including the hard of hearing. There
is a modest charge for this service.
Patron:
We are honoured to have as our patron Fred Macaulay.
We
have talks and discussions led by health professionals, men's
health speakers and others with an interest in the treatment
of prostate problems. After the main part of the meeting we
break for coffee/tea and biscuits. This gives members an opportunity
to have a useful exchange of experiences in an open and friendly
atmosphere.
Throughout
the year we have a variety of speakers both on medical and
on non medical subjects. There is no membership fee but you
are invited to make a donation at the meeting to cover meeting
costs.
At
our meeting in October 2008 the speaker was Victor Griffin
from ukHIFU Ltd and at our November meeting we were addressed
by Cara Taylor, Macmillan Consultant Nurse Cancer from Ninewells
Hospital. Both meetings drew an audience of approximately
30 members.
