Some Facts about Prostate Problems

FACT - Prostate cancer is not the same as the condition known as enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), in which the prostate enlarges. Both conditions usually develop during late middle age and the symptoms may be the same.

FACT - Prostate cancer is usually slow growing and can be treated effectively. However, successful treatment relies on early detection and diagnosis. Unfortunately, because men often avoid visiting their doctor and because they often tend to dismiss health concerns, prostate cancer frequently develops undetected for some time.

FACT - 83% of all Prostate cancers are discovered in the the local and regional stages. 5 year survival rates for patients whose tumors are diagnosed at these stages is 100%.

FACT - The precise cause of prostate cancer is not known. However, it becomes more common as you grow older. It is rare before the age of 50 years but, by 80 years, it may be present in over half of all men.
