Digital Rectal Examination- In more detail

This examination of the prostate gland is a simple, slightly uncomfortable procedure where the doctor feels your prostate gland by inserting a lubricated gloved finger in your rectum (back passage). This type of examination is a procedure also used to examine for other medical conditions such as haemorrhoids and rectal bleeding. During this procedure it helps if you can relax your body, particularly by not tightening your buttocks as this may cause you more discomfort.

You will be asked to lie on a couch on your side with your knees drawn up towards your chin. The doctor will then put a gloved finger into your rectum. He/she will be able to to feel your prostate through the rectum wall and detect any problems or changes from the previous examination.
