Anatomy
and Function of the Normal Prostate
|
The
prostate gland is about the size and shape of a walnut. It is
located at the base of the urethra where the urethra leaves the
bladder and enters the penis. It encircles the segment of the
urethra which is just inferior to the bladder. The prostate is
enclosed by a thick connective tissue capsule and made up of about
20 to 30 compound tubular alveolar glands which are embedded in
a stroma of smooth muscle as well as connective tissue.
The
prostate gland's function is to secrete a milky, slightly acidic
fluid with a characteristic odor, which accounts for one-third
of the semen volume. The fluid contains citrate which is a nutrient
source and several enzymes including fibrinolysin and acid phosphatase.
Its major role is to play a part in activating sperm. The fluid
enters the prostatic urethra via ducts when the prostatic smooth
muscle contracts during ejaculation. The prostate is located in
the male reproductive system where it is considered the most important
male accessory gland.
You
can see the location of the prostate relative to the other reproductive
organs in the picture above.
