The
Scottish Association of Prostate Cancer
Support Groups
The
key messages about our charity are that we exist
(1)
to cater for the present and future needs of men with prostate
cancer present and future.
(2)
to act in support of the consultants who care for us
(3)
to bring about a complete change of attitude to this serious disease
in those who control the purse strings. Note the near 2,000 new
diagnoses each year, and rising; the 700+ deaths each year in
Scotland.
Note the £4m funding of research for prostate cancer compared
with the £30m+ for Breast Cancer research. They have statistics
twice those of prostate cancer. Please could we have even one
third of that level?
We
desperately need non-invasive, highly accurate diagnostic methods
to identify (a) the presence of PCa and (b) its degree of aggressiveness.
We need to seek less radical treatments and these are likely to
come from using genetic tools. The better we fund such research
the sooner we will attain that holy grail.
We
are anxious to co-operate with other bodies with similar aims
so as to achieve our aims sooner rather than later. Since devolution
the NHS in Scotland is totally devolved and independent. We are
looking at ways in which we can strengthen our links with the
Scottish NHS.
